Accoya® used in Gwalia Housing Association Development
Manufacturer Coed Derwen Joinery, based in Blaenavon, South Wales, has recently used Accoya for a major new development project in Llanelli for the Gwalia Housing Association, involving twelve homes and four flats built by Enzo's Construction Limited.
Accoya® has been used to supply 130 windows, 32 doors and the roofline facia boards in the development, completed in December 2007. This is the largest of the 15 Accoya® joinery projects through or on the company's books.
For Ian Widdrington, general manager of Coed Derwen Joinery, the benefits of using Accoya® were clear. "With its impeccable environmental credentials, we firmly believe Accoya® is set to become the industry standard for painted exterior applications," he said.
"As well as sustainability and inservice benefits, the improved uniformity and workability of the product compared to traditional timber fits well with a lean manufacturing process. Yield on the product - is high compared to the laminated oak in our standard joinery range.
"The quality of finish achieved on Accoya® is outstanding. And, with the Sikkens coating, the whole life cost compares favourably with other forms of windows and doors. This was detailed on a project specific basis for the clients consideration with the Whole Life Cost model software developed for Accoya® by the Paint Advisory Bureau and gave specific project costs to the client on a one hour turn around."
He adds: "The introduction of Accoya® reflects our policy for continued improvement and environmental excellence. Coed Derwen is one of a handful of joinery manufacturers to benefit from this new timber which will enable us to expand our current quality specification to new heights and lead the way for product specification for timber windows, doors & conservatories."
